The Hour the Window Brightens

A restless dawn passes, and clear light comes in through the curtains. Unnoticed, the window across the way quietly glimmers. Between the sleep that remains and the morning that has opened, I match my breathing only to the speed at which the day begins. In a neighborhood still without any sound, light settles in first. A heart that had been awake alone shifts its seat little by little, following that light. Morning has arrived, and the sense that it's all right to stand here.

I remember my hand pausing on the curtain before a brightness like that. It was nothing at the time, but thinking back now, that moment was the whole of the day.
