An Inquiry on a Sleepless Night

On sleepless nights, everything in the room becomes kind. On a whim I count the patterns on the wallpaper. Same as yesterday. After a long while of tossing and turning, it dawns on me. It isn't that I can't sleep, it's that sleep is avoiding me. So I'm not a bad person. So I decided to yield. I step one foot out from under the covers and look out the window. Under the streetlamp, a cat looks at me and yawns. It seems the cat has nothing on tonight either. We agree not to disturb each other. I lie back down, and the cat closes its eyes beside the streetlamp. Even on a sleepless night, it's possible to respect each other's time. When morning comes, sleep will find me as if nothing had happened. Until then, I decide to count a few more patterns on the wallpaper.

Last night I too looked out the window, and a stray cat noticed my gaze and flicked its tail once. That was all.
