Water at Two in the Morning
Two in the morning, even without turning on the kitchen light, opening the refrigerator door draws a soft rectangle of light on the floor. From inside it I take out the water bottle and drink a mouthful. Not cold, just lukewarm water. I drank it around this time yesterday too. Nothing happened today either. Just an ordinary day. When I close the refrigerator door the dark returns, and I stand still until my eyes adjust. Suddenly I hear a drop of water falling in the bathroom. The tap must not be fully closed. I can tighten it tomorrow morning. Thinking that, I sit on the living room sofa and look out the window. One light is on in the apartment across the way. Someone may be drinking water like me. I think I'll just sit here until that light goes out.
I sometimes see lit windows at dawn too. When I glimpse that light through the curtains, I think, so I'm not the only one awake. That light will go out soon too. I fall asleep only after seeing it does.
