A Rock in the Sun

An afternoon of clearing clouds, and the rock slowly warmed beneath my palm. The air that had lingered in the shade withdrew, and the sun touched my back. The village roofs were soaking up the light one by one. Sitting a long while, the rock's warmth seeped in through my collar. When I lifted my hand, a warm handprint remained in that spot.

Just as warmth lingers where a hand has lifted, the cat I saw outside the window this morning left a warm trace where it had risen.
