Among the Reeds

A bird cried out among the reeds. I stood there, keeping only the sound.

Did you hear that wind passing through the reeds, I wonder. Yesterday evening, on the stream embankment, I felt it brush my collar. Nothing at all remained in that place.

I too learned in that moment that nothing remains where the wind has passed. The reeds hold the sound, and the collar bears the wind, then settles quietly back down.

I walked to the place where the wind had come over the reeds. No trace of the passage remained; only the edge of some sound was still cool.

Where the reeds had stilled, the wind passed again. Walking along that cool edge, it felt like picking up a single thread of sound.
