The Temperature of Morning
To you. There are days when the morning air feels different from yesterday's. The moment I open the window, I notice the season has quietly changed places. And so we realize that within the flow of the year, our own place is shifting too. The sun is rising. Still weak, the light touches the glass and makes each speck of dust in the room glitter. That light seems tender, but it's a little cool. In that coolness, I take out yesterday's memories and today's heart together. Seasons come and go, but each time we meet them clumsily, as if for the first time. Like first love, like a farewell. So every morning I learn to grow used to things again. How to give myself over to this sweet, unfamiliar temperature. Are you looking out your window right about now? We're under the same sky, so it feels we're a little close, and I'm glad of it. Don't worry. If you simply walk today as it flows, you'll find yourself at the warm temperature of evening before you know it.
Opening the door this morning, the fallen leaves in the yard lay deeper than yesterday. Only seeing that did I know the season had changed.
