On the way to work with earphones in, I haven't actually chosen anything to listen to. I just want to block out the noise, but my mind won't settle on any channel. Since when have I been walking with earphones in, listening to nothing at all?

With earphones in but nothing playing, my steps grew awkward. The people staring out the windows of the evening bus all wore that same expression. Blank-eyed, hands resting on the window frame.
I too have found myself more and more often with earphones in, listening to nothing. On a bus where the view slid past without sound, only then could I hear my own footsteps.
