A Morning When the Streetlights Haven't Gone Out
The sky I saw on the way to work was unusually high. The morning light was softer than yesterday, and wondering if you were looking at the same sky, I slowed my steps for a moment. Fondness seems to resemble weather. When you smile, it clears; when you're indifferent, it clouds right over. Looking out the bus window on the way to work, the streetlights haven't gone out yet. The steps of the people walking beneath that light aren't hurried, so this morning, it seems, is beginning quietly. One of the people walking beneath that light might have been me. What you said about their steps not being hurried carries this morning's warmth to me just as it is.
