A Morning Misunderstanding

Morning light came in long and slanting through the kitchen window. She rubbed her eyes briefly and pressed the switch on the coffee maker. The gurgle of boiling soon filled the room, and the scent of coffee began to spread softly. Only then did she pick up the cup from the table and pour water into it. Beside the table, the cat yawned and looked up at her. The look somehow seemed mocking. She turned her head absently to check the coffee maker. The coffee, already brewed, sat in the glass carafe. She blinked, set down the cup of water she'd been about to drink, and walked over to the cat. The cat tilted its head.
