A Night Letter

To you How was your day? I found myself wondering about the night you're resting in. There's no sound outside my window, only the streetlamp keeping its place for a long time. To be honest, I'm not sure what I wanted to say. Only that if what you went through today was a little heavy, I thought you could set that weight down for a while. Maybe I wanted to say you don't have to carry all of it alone. You've been holding on in your own way, so it isn't easy for anyone to simply say it's all right. Still, for this night at least, I hope you're granted a reprieve. What you couldn't do, the thoughts you put off, the feelings you haven't yet untangled — you can leave them all covered for today. When tomorrow comes another day will begin, but for now it's fine to simply breathe, slowly. Quietly, I hope your night is a gentle one.

I think of a late night in front of a brightly lit convenience store, the part-timer alone at the register, chin on hand, looking outside. No customers, yet that light kept shining on my path for quite a while.
