Morning Just Came

Phrases that dress morning up as a "new beginning" wear on me a little. The light through the curtains feels less welcome than like a spotlight on the worries I'd covered over last night. I put off the alarm a few times, finally get up, drink a glass of water. But the moment the water goes down my throat, my body feels lighter than expected. The kitchen window I look out of while making coffee is the same as yesterday, but the single fact that it's morning light and not sunset makes it a little different. No grand resolutions needed. Some days you only have to get through today. Sitting by the bus window on the way to work, the faces passing by all look alike. Tired, but with a hope inside them for "a slightly better day than yesterday." It's a small relief to know I'm not the only one. Morning isn't so much new as it simply comes. Whether we get up or not, whether we're ready or not. And I'm grateful for that. Even without forcing myself, time moves on, and someday a morning will come that I can greet lightly.

The streetlights passing by the bus window hadn't gone out yet. Before I knew it, the sun was coming up.
