The Warmth of Midday

To you. Around noon, sitting by the window with a coffee, I suddenly thought of you. Most of what we said to each other was small, and yet it's that smallness that has stayed with me longest. A laugh on a day when nothing happened, a brief silence, things like that. Between one person and another there's a gap that can't quite be explained. The closer we are, the farther we find ourselves looking, and even as we say we understand, we drift a little out of line. On days like that, midday can be lonelier than night. But because you're here, today too is bearable. Even if we can never be complete for each other, walking together while holding that lack. Lately I've come to know that this is our way. I'm here beside you. Even without a word, I hope there are days when simply living through the same time is enough. Like now, like the warmth of a kind midday.

Waiting for the subway at noon, sunlight had settled on just one end of the bench on the opposite platform. Until the doors opened, no one tried to sit there.
