The Temperature of Midday
To you, The sun was so lovely today that I sat by the window. The light coming in between the curtains lay long across the floor, and I put my hand on it. It's a strange thing, how long warmth can stay in the memory. In the dream I had last night, you were laughing. I don't remember what you said, but that laugh still hovers in my ear. Even after I woke, I lay looking at the ceiling for a long while, calling that laugh back. Knowing it was a dream, I still wanted to keep that time quietly to myself. As the days grow longer, do my thoughts of you grow longer with them? Yesterday at a café, today walking down the street, I keep coming upon scenes you would love. Each time, I murmur to myself, ‘Ah, I wish I could show you this.’ By the time this letter reaches you, will you be having a sunlit afternoon too? If so, I hope it's just a little warmer. So that your day, and your laugh, can reach me.
Turning pages by the window, the sun that touched the back of my hand stayed a long time. Deep winter, yet that one spot was like a spring day. The warmth I want to keep near always arrives this quietly.
