Refrigerator Light
Two in the morning, she stood for a long while with the refrigerator door open. She wasn't hungry. Standing inside that small light, it felt as if that spot were the only bright place in the world. Close the door and it was dark again. She stood a little longer, and finally closed it.
I too once stood a long while after closing the refrigerator door. The darkness the moment that light went out felt, to me, like something I was meeting for the first time in my life.
